Story of the Week

This is a new feature on Beagles @ USA.  It is called Story Of The Week.  Every week we will have a new story about dogs (mostly Beagles) on this page.  This weeks story comes from Cats & Dogs Magazine.   It is not about Beagles but if you want to imagine that it is, go right ahead.  I found this story under a subtitle called PET HEROES.  I re-wrote some of it, so it is not word for word.  Go head, read it!

DOG DIGS DEEP
TO SAVE CAT
There is a glass-works across the street from an animal shelter that makes windows, it is called The Aietite Window factory.  There is a lot of glass around, so dogs are not allowed over there.  Philip Gozalez brings dog food to the shelter daily.  His dog Ginny comes with him.  For her safety, Ginny has to stay in the car while Philip brings the dog food to the shelter across the street from the factory.  He tells her to stay, and she does, usually.  On this occasion, Ginny dashed out of the car and went to Philip's side.
First, she froze and stood, staring at the loading dock (where Philip brings the food for stray dogs).  Ginny's nose twitched and her ears stood up.  Before Philip could move to stop her, she darted off across the street to the glass factory.  Before anyone could do anything, Ginny started digging at a pile of broken glass.  Philip gasped, Broken Glass!
"Ginny, NO" he was saying.  Then his friend Sheilah saw it and let out a scream.  They both ran toward to loading dock to stop her.  Ginny was cutting herself, deeply, but she didn't seem to care.  She just kept on pawing through the broken glass.  Just before Philip and Sheilah could get to her, Ginny found something and was limping toward them with a cat in her mouth.  Although it was dark outside, Philip could see that Ginny has bloody paws.  Philip's heart sank.  How badly was she hurt?
From the looks of it, Ginny was carrying a curled up ball of fur.  At first, Philip thought it was a baby raccoon.  That made Philip uneasy, because the raccoon's mother might have been near by.  Also, some raccoons may carry rabies.
"Ginny, put that down!" Philip yelled at her.  But she trotted forward.  Ginny didn't seem to notice that her paws were bleeding, and she gently laid the little bundle at her feet.  Suddenly, the small fur ball meowed.  It was a tiny kitten cover in blood and glass.  Who could do such a cruel thing?

Who Could Do Such
A Cruel Thing?
Could the kitten possibly live?  Our first concern was Ginny: we wanted her to heal and be checked up.  Sheilah scooped Ginny up and carried her to the car.  Philip was behind her with the kitten.
As soon as they were in Philip's house, Sheilah took Ginny to the bathroom to look at his cuts.  She didn't try to pull away or anything, even though she was hurting.
They cleaned Ginny up and she got better.  As for the cat, who could not have been more than a week and a half old, they gently pulled out sliver of glass from her coat and skin.
The little cat was very hungry.  So they got out a tiny bottle and fed the kitten goats milk, to replace the mother's milk she had lost.  The kitten drank, then curled up beside Ginny and fell asleep.  A few days later, it was feisty and eating enough for six!

Now you can go back to where you came from!
